What is the first Rolex Perpetual Rotor?

The first Rolex Perpetual Rotor is a self-winding system invented in 1931. It was a benefit to water resistance and other durability matters. You did not have to unscrew the crown and wind the watch manually. The self-winding system continuously winds the mainspring to ensure greater regularity and precision of the regulation.

Why did Rolex introduce the first Perpetual Rotor?

Most of the watches during that time were manual wind. You needed to wind the watch regularly for it to work. Humidity and impurities will penetrate the movement when unscrewing its waterproof winding crown.

Hans Wilsdorf wanted the Oyster concept to ensure a hermetical environment for the movement. He needed a watch movement that re-winds itself without the help of outside energy.
